Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Inaugurated

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway was inaugurated on July 13, 2026, by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. With travel time between the two cities reduced from around two-and-a-half to three hours to just 40-45 minutes, the expressway is likely to encourage new housing, commercial and industrial development along the route.

Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore, the six-lane expressway can be expanded to eight lanes in the future and connects Shaheed Path in Lucknow with Chakeri in Kanpur while passing through parts of Unnao district. The expressway features smart highway technology including AI-enabled surveillance cameras, Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Speed Monitoring System and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems.

Faster connectivity makes areas outside the city more attractive, especially for families looking for larger homes and better living conditions. The areas along the Kanpur–Lucknow Road are already seeing increased interest from developers. Banthra, situated close to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, stands to benefit from better access to both Lucknow and Kanpur through the expressway. Residential development and attractive deals will lure home buyers towards Banthra owing to the development of the expressway, Outer Ring Road and other infrastructural improvements.

The opening of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway will be a significant boost to real estate in Uttar Pradesh as it connects the two largest cities. Good connectivity leads to more commercial office spaces, shops, hotels, hospitals, educational institutes, among others. Immediately after the opening of any expressway, the dynamics of the land market surrounding the expressway change dramatically. Lucknow recorded a spectacular 48% jump in sales value, reaching ₹1,797 crore in Q1 2025—the highest growth among all tier-2 cities in India, with a 25% surge in residential unit sales totaling 1,301 units and capital appreciation of 22.61%. In 2024, Lucknow witnessed the launch of 61 new real estate projects, spanning approximately 53,655 units and 9.29 lakh sq m of space, with an investment of ₹6,150 crore, as per UP RERA.
