Delhi-Meerut RRTS Goes Fully Live

India's first Regional Rapid Transit System has gone fully operational. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 22 February, formally dedicated the entire 82 Km Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System corridor to the nation, flagging off the Namo Bharat train at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station. India's first Regional Rapid Transit System, or Namo Bharat line, was formally opened in its 82km entirety from New Delhi to Meerut by the prime minister on February 22. This is the culmination of a project that has been built in stages over more than two years.

The rollout tells its own story about how India builds RRTS lines. The Delhi-Meerut RRTS opened in phases: the first 17km priority section linking Sahibabad to Duhai opened in October 2023, with line length increasing to 54km when Modi inaugurated the New Ashok Nagar-Meerut South section in January 2025. The final two sections — the 6km between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and the 21km between Meerut South and Modipuram, along with the Metro section from Meerut South to Modipuram — were approved for passenger service more recently. Each phase added ridership and de-risked the next, a sequencing pattern NCRTC is expected to repeat on future corridors.

On specifications, the corridor is engineered for genuine intercity speed rather than urban-metro pace. The largely elevated line has been designed for operation at up to 180 km/h, although the Namo Bharat branded services are currently limited to 160 km/h. Namo Bharat is expected to allow commuters to travel between Delhi and Meerut in under an hour, even with intermediate stops. Among the 22 stations, Anand Vihar, Meerut Central, Bhaisali and Begumpul are underground, forming part of an 11.5 km underground stretch, with the remaining stations elevated.

Governance and interchange design are the other pieces future corridors will copy. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation, a joint venture of the Government of India and the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, operates the Namo Bharat corridor. Sarai Kale Khan, the originating station of the corridor, is one of four Namo Bharat stations commissioned with this inauguration and is strategically located as a major multi-modal hub, seamlessly connecting Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro's Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road. That same Sarai Kale Khan hub is being built to do double duty for the next line on the network.

That next line runs north toward Panipat, and it is already moving from paper to ground. Delhi-Panipat RAPIDX RRTS is a 103 km long proposed semi-high speed rail line connecting Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat through a series of tunnels and elevated viaducts as part of the Regional Rapid Transit System, originating from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, connecting to Kashmere Gate ISBT and continuing north along National Highway 44 through Sonipat, Gannaur and Samalakha to Panipat. Groundwork has genuinely begun: NCRTC has officially commenced preparatory work for the Delhi-Panipat RRTS corridor, part of the ₹36,000 crore infrastructure initiative, with officials confirming in October 2025 that utility diversion has begun along a 22-kilometer stretch between Narela and Murthal. Planners are also thinking beyond Panipat: following the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, the Delhi-Panipat-Karnal RRTS Corridor is proposed as the next major link, planned at 136 km to integrate with existing and upcoming transport systems in Delhi and Haryana.

For homebuyers, the Meerut corridor's completion is a live case study of how transit reshapes land value along a stretch that was semi-rural a decade ago. NCRTC is replicating the interchange model at the Delhi end: NCRTC is developing the Sarai Kale Khan terminal in Delhi as a major interchange point for multiple RRTS lines, connecting with the currently operational Delhi-Meerut route and future corridors to ensure seamless interoperability across the network. Panipat itself is where this shift is already visible on the ground. M3M has committed its largest Haryana land parcel to the belt directly served by the future corridor: M3M City of Dreams Panipat is strategically located in Sectors 36 & 37, spanning over 333-350 acres with a mix of residential plots, villas, independent floors, retail spaces and amenities, and being close to NH-44, the project has smooth connectivity to Delhi, Gurugram, Sonipat, Karnal and Chandigarh, with the upcoming RRTS between Delhi and Panipat expected to further boost the real estate value of the region. Demand traction is already measurable: the company has already sold over 700 plots worth about Rs 1,100 crore out of 2,100 plots, and is targeting Rs 5,000 crore in revenue from the township.

Official commentary around the Meerut launch underscores why NCR planners see RRTS as a network, not a one-off line. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the inauguration of the Meerut Metro, Namo Bharat train and the new RRTS section would make the lives of people in the National Capital Region simpler, smoother and more convenient. Transport analysts covering the launch frame it in similar terms: planners say the corridor represents a major shift in regional mobility, particularly for thousands of daily commuters.
