A new traffic master plan drafted by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in May 2026 has put forward one of the most significant infrastructure proposals for the Delhi-Gurugram corridor in recent years. The plan calls for extending the eight-lane Dwarka Expressway all the way to Mayapuri Ring Road in west Delhi, a move aimed squarely at fixing the chronic congestion that plagues commuters near Mahipalpur and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The root problem the plan addresses is well known to anyone who drives this stretch regularly. The proposed extension is intended to provide a direct link to the Mayapuri Ring Road, enabling commuters to circumvent the heavily congested Mahipalpur zone where the expressway currently merges into NH-48. Traffic at this junction is frequently disrupted, causing motorists to endure delays sometimes extending up to 20 minutes within the expressway's three-kilometer tunnel, according to reports citing the DIAL study.
The extension is not a standalone proposal. Key recommendations include extending the Dwarka Expressway to Mayapuri Ring Road, the Barapullah extension to Mahipalpur, the Rangpuri Bypass, construction of the Greater Southern Peripheral Road in Gurugram, and a Rezang La Chowk elevated flyover. Together, these works are designed to spread traffic more evenly across the corridor instead of funneling nearly every vehicle back onto the overloaded NH-48.
The report behind the plan flags NH-48 dependency as the core design flaw of the current network. The report says one of the biggest reasons behind the traffic mess is that most major roads eventually merge back into NH-48, increasing pressure on the already overloaded highway. If the Mayapuri extension goes ahead, vehicles moving from Gurugram toward central and west Delhi would get a route that avoids this bottleneck entirely, rather than being pulled back into it near the airport.
On the Gurugram side, complementary works are also being planned to strengthen last-mile connectivity into the sectors along the expressway. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has prepared a Rs 52-crore plan for the comprehensive renovation of a 9-kilometer stretch from Basai village to IFFCO Chowk, via Maharaja Agrasen Chowk. This local upgrade, still awaiting final approval from the High-Powered Works Committee, is separate from the DIAL proposal but is expected to work in tandem with it to improve access across nearly 100 sectors and housing societies once cleared.
For homebuyers evaluating projects along Dwarka Expressway, including the Sector 111-113 stretch where M3M has launched several residential developments, the practical takeaway is about future travel time to the airport and central Delhi rather than an immediate change. High-level meetings are underway to finalize the financial and strategic approvals for this expressway extension, and the proposal is still at the master-plan stage, meaning implementation timelines and funding are yet to be finalized. Buyers should treat this as a long-term connectivity tailwind for the corridor rather than a project with a confirmed completion date.
What is clear is the direction of intent: DIAL, the Haryana government, and Delhi's urban planning bodies are actively working on decongesting the single busiest interchange feeding IGI Airport. For a corridor that already hosts brands like M3M with projects such as M3M Capital, M3M Crown, M3M St. Andrews, and M3M Elie Saab, any credible reduction in airport travel time strengthens the long-term investment case, even before ground work begins.
