GMDA Invites Consultant Bids for Ghata-Vatika Elevated Corridor DPR

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has restarted planning for the long-delayed Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) elevated corridor by inviting bids to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the 6 km Ghata Chowk–Vatika Chowk stretch.

The proposed stretch forms part of a larger 12 km elevated corridor envisioned to create a signal-free route linking Ghata Chowk with National Highway-8. This move marks a critical step in addressing chronic traffic congestion that has plagued southern Gurugram for nearly seven years. The selected consultant will undertake traffic studies, geotechnical investigations, utility mapping, structural assessments and alignment planning before finalising the DPR and tender documents.

The authority expects the report to be completed within three months of the consultant's appointment, following which construction tenders may be floated. The elevated corridor design aligns with traffic management standards already proven effective in the region. The proposed elevated corridor is being planned on the lines of Dwarka Expressway, with the objective of ensuring seamless traffic movement along the corridor. Service road, drainage and footpath will also be addressed.

The project has undergone multiple redesigns since 2019, with changing traffic forecasts, metro integration plans and infrastructure additions repeatedly pushing up costs and delaying execution. The elevated model was finalized after extensive deliberation, with experts noting that due to the natural gradient of the area, water from Ghata tends to flow towards Badshapur, leading to severe flooding during the monsoon, making an elevated road necessary to ensure smooth movement of traffic even during heavy rains.

For homebuyers and investors in southern Gurugram, this infrastructure upgrade represents transformative connectivity improvements. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve mobility, reduce travel times, and ease congestion along the rapidly developing Southern Peripheral Road. The elevated section will create seamless interchange points, particularly at Vatika Chowk, enabling direct connectivity to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Sohna Road corridors.

Specifications & FAQ

What is the scope of the Ghata-Vatika elevated corridor project?
GMDA is inviting bids to prepare a DPR for the 6 km Ghata Chowk–Vatika Chowk stretch. This forms part of a larger 12 km elevated corridor envisioned to create a signal-free route linking Ghata Chowk with National Highway-8.
When will construction begin?
The authority expects the DPR to be completed within three months of the consultant's appointment, following which construction tenders may be floated. The corridor is expected to be completed within three years.
How will the elevated corridor improve traffic flow?
The proposed elevated corridor is being planned on the lines of Dwarka Expressway, with the objective of ensuring seamless traffic movement along the corridor. The corridor is expected to integrate with a planned interchange at Vatika Chowk, featuring an elevated structure over the Gurugram-Sohna Highway and an underpass along SPR to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement.
Why was the elevated design chosen over flyovers?
Due to the natural gradient of the area, water from Ghata tends to flow towards Badshapur, leading to severe flooding during the monsoon. The CM has now accepted the demand for an elevated corridor, which will completely change Gurugram's traffic profile.
What does the DPR process involve?
The selected consultant will undertake traffic studies, geotechnical investigations, utility mapping, structural assessments and alignment planning before finalising the DPR and tender documents.
How does this corridor connect to the larger SPR project?
The entire stretch of around 12km between Ghata Chowk and NH8 will be constructed as an elevated road with an interchange planned at Vatika Chowk to connect with the Sohna elevated corridor.
What was the previous status of this project?
The project has undergone multiple redesigns since 2019, with changing traffic forecasts, metro integration plans and infrastructure additions repeatedly pushing up costs and delaying execution.
How will this benefit residents in southern Gurugram?
As residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments continue to expand along SPR, improved road infrastructure remains critical to supporting future growth, and if implemented successfully, the elevated corridor could become a major catalyst for connectivity, real estate development, and economic activity across southern Gurugram.
What connectivity will the corridor provide?
The SPR redevelopment has been planned as a major east-west connectivity corridor in Gurugram, linking rapidly developing residential and commercial areas in the southern sectors with key routes including NH-8, Sohna Road, Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Gurugram-Faridabad Road.
