Authorities Shut Illegal Highway Entry Points to Curb Accidents

The district administration has decided to close all illegal cuts and remove encroachments on the Pipli- Kurukshetra University road in Thanesar. This enforcement action represents a critical step in mitigating road safety risks that have escalated following the completion of the highway upgrade project.

The six-laning of the Pipli-Kurukshetra University road had been done due to which vehicles moved at a high speed and accidents took place due to illegal cuts. Sometimes a vehicle approaching the roads from illegal cuts becomes the cause of accident. The problem gets more serious during foggy days. These unauthorized access points create sudden, unpredictable entry points that force drivers into unplanned lane changes—a particular hazard on high-speed corridors.

The administration had identified nearly eight locations where illegal cuts would be closed and a number of points on the road where business houses had encroached the Pipli-KU stretch, which was the lifeline of the area. The officials identified illegal cuts in front of a petrol pump near Pipli, before and in front of the police lines, near Hari Nagar and Sector 13, and in front of the Theme Park, Neelkanthi Yatri Niwas and the Old bus stand.

It will help reduce the number of accidents in the city area. according to Thanesar SDM Surender Pal. The closure aligns with national highway safety standards, as unauthorised structures, commercial establishments, temporary sheds, illegal access points and unapproved median cuts along highways pose serious safety risks by obstructing visibility, narrowing carriageways and disrupting traffic flow. Such encroachments were said to increase the likelihood of road accidents by forcing sudden lane changes, by reducing drivers' reaction time and by creating unsafe entry and exit points.

Recent road accident data shows a decline in the number of road accidental deaths in Kurukshetra with 188 people losing lives in 2024 compared to nearly 260 reported in 2023, with 464 road accidents including 201 fatal and 263 non-fatal accidents reported in which 188 people lost their lives and 413 people were injured. Such enforcement actions contribute to this positive trend.
